Current Evidence and Future Directions in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer

Guest Editors:  Nicola Avenia, Roberto Cirocchi and Georgi Popivanov

Management of colorectal cancers have undergone a sea change. Surgery still remains the mainstay of the treatment, however this too has evolved considerably since the introduction of laparoscopic surgery, 3D surgery, and robotics surgery. However, it is the chemotherapy that has made a significant impact on survival of these patients by controlling metastatic spread in colon cancer. The scene is slowly shifting to tailored treatment, depending on presence of various biomarkers and mutations. On the other hand, sphincter preservation has been made possible lowering rectal cancers by introduction of preoperative radiotherapy. These developments have not only increased the survival but also the quality of life of survivors.

In this thematic series, relevant articles are invited on colorectal cancer. The articles must relate to current and future trends in treatment of colorectal cancer. Surgical innovations, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, tumor targeting and tailoring therapy for colorectal cancer will be considered.
